Powerlifting classification chart

Official classes, youth too

The squat, bench press and deadlift added up, the way a meet counts them. Enter three sets and the tool shows which class your total would match and how far the next one is.

In the app: the history of every lift. Your estimated max, your best set and every workout, on a chart and in a list.

Reps are optional: leave them out and the weight counts as your one-rep max. A set of 1-5 reps gives the sharpest number.

Enter your body weight, age and a set to see where you stand.

A class is only ever given at a meet, with judges and the rules of the IPF. This is an estimate from your set, not a title.

Not sure what your max is? Work it out from a working set.

Powerlifting classification

The classes and titles of a national powerlifting federation that is a member of the IPF, the ones a lifter earns at its meets. The IPF itself sets weight classes, rules and records, not classes. The total is the best squat, bench press and deadlift of one meet added up, and the class goes by your weight class.

How the tool counts

From your set it estimates a one-rep max with the Epley formula: weight × (1 + reps / 30). It's the same formula as our 1RM calculator and the Coach.AI app, so the numbers agree. A single rep is taken as it is.

A set of 1-5 reps gives the sharpest number. From a set of 15 the estimate drifts, and the class it shows will look better than it would on a platform.

02

Classic, equipped and your class

Classic means no wraps and no supportive gear; knee sleeves are fine. Equipped lifters press in a stiff bench shirt and squat in a suit, which is why their standards are higher. The tool works with classic.

Your weight class is the first one you fit into: at 80 kg that's up to 83. The lightest classes are for younger lifters only, so a 24-year-old man at 51 kg competes up to 59.

03

A class is earned on the platform

A class or title is given only for a result at a meet: judges, squat depth, a pause on the chest in the bench and an official record of the result. Master of Sport, International Class is done only at international IPF or EPF meets.

Coach.AI shows no classes. It logs your sets, estimates your max, keeps your records and builds your next week from them. When you want to see what the number means, this is the page.

Questions people ask

How much should I bench for my body weight?

On the gym levels, a man of 82.5 kg (182 lb) is at Strong from 112.5 kg and at Very strong from 127.5 kg. A woman of 60 kg is at Strong from 52.5 kg. Lighter lifters need less and heavier ones more, which is why every number above goes by body weight.

What is a good bench press?

It depends on who's asking. On the gym levels, Strong is where years of steady training start to show. On the official classification, a man up to 83 kg needs 107.5 kg for class III and 152.5 kg for Candidate Master in the classic bench.

What's the difference between classic and equipped?

Classic lifters wear a belt, wrist wraps and knee sleeves at most. Equipped lifters use a stiff bench shirt, a squat suit and knee wraps, which add a lot to the bar, so their standards are higher.

Why does the squat have no official classes?

The classification has separate standards only for the bench press, which has meets of its own. The squat and the deadlift count inside the total. For them the site has gym levels 1-7.

What are levels 1-7?

Reference numbers for the gym, from amateur powerlifting standards for lifters without equipment at drug-tested meets. They're no titles and nobody awards them, but they exist for every lift and, from 40, for your age.

Does the tool take age into account?

Yes. From 13 to 18 the youth classes join the scale; Master of Sport is given from 15 and the international class from 16. From 40 you also get a level for your age, and those standards drop with each decade.
